Hei tiki represent the form of the first human and are a remembrance of tūpuna (ancestors) that guide us forward. They are a prestigious gift and can be seen as ornaments of honour and status.
This exquisitely hand-tooled hei tiki was carved by Layton Robertson and measures approximately 70 x 45 mm. It is bound with a 24 cm hand-made, authentic muka cord at a fixed length which features an albatross bone toggle.
Crafted using traditional methods and hand tools. The process of creating this unique taonga involved hōanga (sandstone), onepū (sand), manaia chert, kuta, and concluding with kōkōwai. The entire process took around 130 hours.
