The oro (song) of the pūrerehua is designed to imitate the whirling and fluttering of the native Pūriri moth. The pūrerehua is an instrument for communicating with those from this realm and the one beyond.
Māori uses varied from luring lizards, summoning rain and attracting a soul mate. In another tradition, several are played in unison at tangi (funerals).
This piece was hand-carved by Alex Sands from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 125mm by 61mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
