Manaia Pounamu Sculpture - Greenstone Sculpture

Sands Carving Studio

The manaia is the embodiment of mana - the archetypal Māori measurement of worth, respect, and prestige. Along with its role as a kaitiaki (protector) of earth, sea and sky, manaia are spiritual beings which act as messengers between the earthly world and the spiritual. With ethereal presence and energy, manaia protect the wearer and help maintain spiritual balance.

This manaia was carved by Alex Sands from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, with notched paua eyes. It measures 140mm by 60mm and it sits on a Matai base.
