From the discovery of Aotearoa by the original whale rider Paikea, tohorā (whales) have been highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua (spirit) of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.
This hiku tohorā was carved by Samuel Potter from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 50mm by 85mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
