Hei tiki represent the form of the first human. When worn, they provide a tangible link to the tūpuna (ancestors) that brought us into this world and guide us forward. Traditionally worn by Māori as ornaments of respect and status, they are a prestigious gift to be handed down as taonga (treasure) through the generations carrying the wisdom and mana of those who wore them previously.
This double-sided hei tiki was carved by Yuki Tanaka from inanga pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. Featuring intricate whakarei unaunahi detailing, it showcases red wax eyes on one side and notched pāua shell eyes on the reverse, creating two distinct expressions within a single taonga. It measures 120mm by 75mm. It has a semi-gloss finish and mounted on a stone and brass display stand. The complete display, including the stand, measures 190mm high x 110mm wide.
