Kōauau Ponga Ihu - Nose Flute

Sands Carving Studio

The kōauau ponga ihu is a traditional Māori nose flute made from a small hue (gourd) with its neck removed. Played by blowing with one nostril, these taonga pūoro produce a sweet, delicate, and high-pitched tone often likened to a seabird’s call, usually featuring 2-3 holes for playing soft, mesmerizing melodies

This kōauau ponga ihu was done by Jeremy Walsh from hue-gourd. It measures 45mm in diameter.
