Manaia, a powerful personal guardian in Māori tradition, embodies mana – the concept of power, authority, and prestige. Believed to possess ethereal presence and energy, the manaia protects its wearer and maintains spiritual balance. In Māori cosmology, the Manaia is often depicted as a kaitiaki (protector) and messenger between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
This manaia was hand carved by Jeremy Walsh from kōkopu pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, with inlaid notched paua eye . It measures 80mm by 47mm, has a semi-gloss finish and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
