Often considered descendants of Tangaroa, whales whakapapa to Māori and are highly regarded tūpuna (ancestors) symbolising abundance and strength. Rei puta symbolise this connection, with the carver taking the form of the rei niho parāoa (sperm whale tooth) and infusing it with their own inspiration.
This mako niho was crafted by Yuki Tanaka from kawakawa and inanga pounamu source from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 50mm by 30mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is hung on a sterling silver chain
