Manaia, a powerful personal guardian in Māori tradition, embodies mana – the concept of power, authority, and prestige. Believed to possess ethereal presence and energy, the manaia protects its wearer and maintains spiritual balance. In Māori cosmology, the manaia is often depicted as a kaitiaki (protector) and messenger between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
This taonga was hand-carved by Jeremy Walsh from inanga pounamu, sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, whakarei with unaunahi and inlaid with red wax eye. It measures 90mm by 56mm, has a semi-gloss finish and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
