Manaia, a powerful personal guardian in Māori tradition, embodies mana – the concept of power, authority, and prestige. Believed to possess ethereal presence and energy, the manaia protects its wearer and maintains spiritual balance. In Māori cosmology, the manaia is often depicted as a kaitiaki (protector) and messenger between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
This taonga was hand-carved by Jeremy Walsh from Raukaraka pounamu, sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, inlaid with paua eyes. It measures 98mm by 31mm, has a semi-gloss finish, it is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord, with whakapapa notches and red wax eyes.
