The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka.
This pekapeka was carved by Yuki Tanaka from inanga pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, inlaid with notch paua eye and red wax eyes. It measures 83mm by 57mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
