Often considered descendants of Tangaroa, whales whakapapa to Māori and are highly regarded tūpuna (ancestors) symbolising abundance and strength. Rei puta symbolise this connection, with the carver taking the form of the rei niho parāoa (sperm whale tooth) and infusing it with their own inspiration.
This rei puta was carved by Aaron Marshall from Tangiwai pounamu sourced from Anita Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 63mm by 50mm. This taonga has semi-gloss finish, it is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord, with unaunahi whakarei, whakapapa notches and inlaid with a notched paua aye.
