Pekapeka Parāoa - Whale Rib Bone Bat Pendant

The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka.
This pekapeka was carved by Mahony Tupou from humpback whale rib bone with unaunahi whakarei and inlaid with paua eyes. It measures 130mm by 65mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
