Literally meaning ‘carved face,’ wheku are traditionally carved from wood and mounted on the gable of whare tupuna. There, they represent a venerated ancestor that the building is named after. Wheku are an ideal gift for those who are intimately connected to their whakapapa and those who want a more direct bond to tupuna (an ancestor).
This wheku was carved by Yuki Tanaka from Inanga pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 48mm by 53mm, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
