The anchor of a traditional Māori waka (canoe) is called a punga, which refers to a heavy carved or shaped stone anchor tied with flax cordage via holes, grooves or enclosed in woven baskets. The punga whakawhenua is the main anchor placed at the stern of the voyaging waka (canoe). The punga kārewa, which is the smaller anchor would be used at the bow to steady the vessel in rough seas.
This punga was carved by Alex Sands from Pipiwharauroa Inanga pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 80mm by 55mm. It has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
