Traditional Maori heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women. Often the decorations on pre-European heru were a symbol of mana and prestige.
This heru was carved by Mahony Tupou from cow bone. It measures 205mm by 48mm, with inlaid with paua eyes and has a semi- gloss finish.
