Heru - Cow Bone Comb

Sands Carving Studio

Traditional Maori heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women. Often the decorations on pre-European heru were a symbol of mana and prestige.

This heru was carved by Finau Katoa from cow bone. It measures 170mm by 45mm, with unaunahi whakarei, inlaid with paua eye and has a semi- gloss finish.
