Often considered descendants of Tangaroa, whales whakapapa to Māori and are highly regarded tūpuna (ancestors) symbolising abundance and strength. Rei puta symbolise this connection, with the carver taking the form of the rei niho parāoa (sperm whale tooth) and infusing it with their own inspiration.
This rei puta was carved by Alex Sands from flower jade raukaraka pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa set with solid 9ct gold capped by John Mayo. It measures 50mm by 35mm. This taonga has semi-gloss finish.
