Wheku Onewa - Basalt Carved Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Literally meaning ‘carved face,’ wheku are traditionally carved from wood and mounted on the gable of whare tupuna. There, they represent a venerated ancestor that the building is named after. Wheku are an ideal gift for those who are intimately connected to their whakapapa and those who want a more direct bond to tupuna (an ancestor).

This wheku was carved by Jeremy Walsh from onewa sourced from Aotearoa New Zealand, engraved with unaunahi and inlaid with paua eyes. It measures 55mm by 40mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
